Seth Burnside’s Family
Jessica Burnside was just 22 weeks pregnant when she gave birth to her baby boy, Seth. While doctors were doing everything they could, his chance for survival was slim. Despite this, Seth kept holding on. Refusing to leave his side, Jessica took up residence in a chair outside of the NICU. Hospital social workers encouraged her to stay in the Ronald McDonald House near UChicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital.
“This is a place of miracles,” says Jessica. “This was one of the most painful and frightening times of my life, but Ronald McDonald House became one of my favorite places in the world. The House became a home and the staff became part of my family. The House provided shelter, food, transportation, friendship, support, solace and comfort in my most broken hour and gave me a sense of normalcy for the first time in my year-long journey.”
Today, Seth is 15 months old and has been home for a month. He still faces challenges and requires additional procedures. Each time, Jessica is welcomed back to Ronald McDonald House.
