Your commitment of time is the greatest gift of all

“We’re the lucky ones. The families are just so beautiful. To see the love is what really matters.”
Kathy Kirk, volunteer for 29 years

As a volunteer, you make a direct and immediate impact to our children and families. Whether you volunteer individually or in a group, we welcome you to come work the best job in town – service to our families at their moment of greatest need.  From cooking, cleaning, comforting or by simply being there, volunteers help us care for our families.

We have several ways for you to donate your time and invite you to find an opportunity that fits you best.

Family Activities volunteers (up to 8 people) provide daily activities at the Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children’s and weekly activities at four of our Houses such as arts and crafts, story time, laughter therapy, music during dinner, theater and more.  The possibilities are endless for our volunteers to share their time and talents to create a “daily diversion”  for our families.  If you have a talent you’d like to share, let us know. *Please note: Family Activities does not include baking.

Meals from the Heart

Through our Meals from the Heart program, our generous volunteers come together to provide warm, home-cooked meals and freshly baked treats to the families.

Individual Opportunities

Being an individual volunteer requires making a one year commitment, as well as attending training sessions.

Family Ambassadors

Family Ambassadors greet families, assist at check-in, give a tour, and help them acclimate.  Family Ambassadors also contribute to House operations, answering phones and helping families with their daily needs.

House Refreshers

For the volunteer who likes to stay busy, House Refreshers help organize the common areas, collect donations and stock supplies and linens.  This team is vital to providing a comfortable stay for our families, as House Refreshers get to meet families all over the House while they are working to ensure everything is tidy and fresh.

Kitchen Helpers

Kitchen Helpers help keep our kitchen tidy, organized and ready for our Meals from the Heart volunteers.  Because the kitchen is the heart of every home, it is the “hub” of activity at our House.  There are plenty of opportunities to connect with families and get to know their stories.

Transplant Liaisons – Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children’s only

Transplant Liaisons work to ensure the transplant floors are neat, tidy and disinfected (as children staying within the floors are highly susceptible to common illness).  Transplant Liaisons are the “steady face” for our families so they can rest assured that the floor is being cared for with a critical eye.  The role involves hands-on family interaction including mentoring and modeling safe kitchen procedures, as well as being an advocate for these families, ensuring that we meet all their needs and alleviate any of their concerns.

Home Improvement Team

With such a large House, there are many fix-it projects.  Volunteers who like to use their hands will work closely with our House team to oversee the home improvement list.  Job assignments include everything from changing light bulbs to fixing broken items in the House.

Meal Helper – Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children’s only

Meal Helpers act as a partner to our Meals from the Heart volunteers while they are cooking at the House and act as a lead in helping them access the House and utilize the kitchen to it’s highest potential. Meal Helpers help find supplies, orient the Meals from the Heart volunteers and keep the kitchens organized during the meal.

Volunteer FAQs

How often can I volunteer?

You can participate in a one-time opportunity as part of a group or at a special event, or you can volunteer regularly as an individual volunteer at our Houses or Family Rooms. We ask our individual volunteers to commit to set, recurring shifts for at least one year.

Can I bring my kids with me?

Some volunteer opportunities have specific age requirements (volunteers must be at least 13, for example, to work in the kitchen). Once we know how you’d like to volunteer with us, our Volunteer Manager will be able to answer questions specific to the people in your family or volunteer group.

I want to help, but I’m not sure where I’ll be most useful.

No problem! Identify the House or Family Room in which you would like to volunteer and fill out the application. We’ll match you with the opportunities that make the most sense for your skills, interests and availability. We will also provide you with all of the training you’ll need to help us support children and families.
