The Kitchen Is Open Again—and It Feels Like Home

For the past six months, the kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children’s has been closed for renovation. And while the construction dust has been flying, we’ve been thinking a lot about what this space means.

It’s where coffee is poured early in the morning after a long night at the hospital. It’s where volunteers chop vegetables side-by-side, talking about their days. It’s where kids do homework at the table while dinner simmers on the stove.

This kitchen has always been more than a kitchen. And now, it’s back—and better than ever.

A Fresh Start, Built with Love

We’ve created a warm, welcoming space where families can gather, share meals, and find a little comfort during some of their hardest days. The kitchen is now professional chef-grade and the dining room has been completely refreshed—ready to serve over 140,000 meals each year to families at the House, as well as the Ronald McDonald House in Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald Family Room inside Lurie Children’s.

But the best part isn’t the renovation itself. It’s what’s happening now that the doors are open again. Families are gathering for dinner, volunteers are back behind the stove, and staff is moving with ease. The heart of the House is beating again.

This Kitchen Exists Because of  Supporters Like You

This was a community effort from start to finish. Every bit of love and generosity went straight into the walls (and floors and cabinets) of this new space. We really hope you’re proud of what you helped create because it’s already making a difference.

We would like to extend a special thank you to Kevin Ozan, Maestro Cares Foundation, Ronald L. McDaniel Foundation, Griffith Foods, Jackson®, Antunovich Associates, Middleby, and the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Foundation for their support.

Now that the kitchen is open, we’re also bringing our Meals from the Heart program back to the House. It’s a chance to come in, cook a meal with a few friends, and serve it to families staying at the House. Our House chef handles the menu and walks you through everything. You don’t need to be a pro—just come ready to chop, stir, and share some good food with great people.
