June Volunteer of the Month – Andrew Cedillo
How long have you volunteered with us?
I started volunteering back in August of last year.
Where/how do you typically volunteer (House, event, committee, other?), and what do you usually do?
I volunteer in the kitchen as a meal helper at the Ronald McDonald House® near Lurie Children’s. I assist in any capacity the chef needs, from cutting vegetables to washing heavy pots, I do it all. I enjoy it because it not onlt keeps me busy all day, but I know families will benefit from the prepared meals when they come back from a long day at the hospital.
Why did you first start volunteering with RMHC-CNI, and what keeps you coming back?
My mom volunteered with her company and told me about her experience. She had a great time working with the chef and thought I’d enjoy it too, since I like working in the kitchen. I gave it a try, and I truly enjoyed it so much, which is why I continue to volunteer. I’m also grateful to my employer, the Compass Group, for adjusting my schedule and allowing me to volunteer regularly.
What is your favorite memory or experience from volunteering?
Every volunteer shift feels both meaningful and joyful. I love the chance to meet new people and be part of a team that truly cares. Working alongside the chefs has been such a gift—they’re not only incredibly knowledgeable but also kind and patient. I’ve learned so much from them, and every shift leaves me feeling grateful.
What does it mean to you to donate your time to our organization?
Cooking for others is a true pleasure. Knowing that a meal I helped prepare brings comfort to kids and families makes every moment worth it.
If someone was thinking about becoming a volunteer with our organization, what would you tell them about getting involved?
I would absolutely recommend volunteering here—or at any Ronald McDonald House. The team is warm, welcoming, and great to work with, and the entire environment makes you feel right at home. It’s been such a fulfilling and memorable experience.
