December Volunteer of the Month – Andy Duerkop
Meet our volunteers! Each month, we highlight stand-out volunteers and how they support families. For December, we spoke with Andy Duerkop!
How long have you volunteered with us?
I started volunteering right when the Family Room inside Advocate Children’s Hospital opened, so I’ve been with the team for about a year now. I was one of the very first volunteers, and it’s been such a rewarding experience to watch the Family Room grow and support families in need.
Where/how do you typically volunteer (House, event, committee, other?) and what do you usually do?
I volunteer as a Team Volunteer at the Advocate Family Room in Park Ridge. I love staying busy and jumping in wherever I’m needed – whether that’s helping to keep things clean, baking cookies, or setting up lunches. There’s always something to be done! But what I really enjoy most is interacting with the families and connecting with other volunteers. I also help train new volunteers, which is something I love doing.
Why did you first start volunteering with RMHC-CNI, and what keeps you coming back?
I’ve had friends who are on the Board of other Ronald McDonald House chapters and have donated to RMHC-CNI, and I even attended the Gala a few years ago. When I retired and heard about the Family Room opening nearby, I knew it was the perfect time to volunteer my time. I’m incredibly passionate about helping families who are going through difficult times, and being able to offer comfort and support when they need it most keeps me coming back.
What is your favorite memory or experience from volunteering?
One of the most meaningful experiences was running into people I knew at the Family Room – families with premature babies who were seeking respite and support. It was so heartwarming to see how much comfort the Family Room provided during such a tough time in their lives. I also love chatting with families and helping out wherever I can. The gratitude they express for the Family Room and everything it offers is truly touching.
What does it mean to you to donate your time to our organization?
RMHC-CNI is an incredible organization, and I truly feel that I’m getting just as much out of it as the families do. It’s such a fulfilling experience to be there and offer my support to such a wonderful cause. Helping families in their time of need gives me a sense of purpose and makes me feel good knowing I’m making a difference.
If someone was thinking about becoming a volunteer with our organization, what would you tell them about getting involved?
I would absolutely encourage anyone to volunteer! The entire community at RMHC-CNI is so welcoming and kind, and the opportunities are very flexible. Volunteering here not only allows you to make a real impact on families in need but also connects you to an amazing group of people. It’s such a great way to give back and be part of something truly special.
