April Volunteer of the Month – Barbara Flanigan
Meet our volunteers! Each month, we highlight stand-out volunteers and how they support families. For April, also National Volunteer Month, we spoke with Barbara Flanigan!
How long have you volunteered with us?
I just celebrated my 1-year Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana anniversary!
Where/how do you typically volunteer (House, event, committee, other?), and what do you usually do?
I volunteer at the Ronald McDonald Family Room® in Lurie Children’s, specifically the Hospitality Cart where I get to assist with offering items including snacks, beverages, toiletry products like toothbrushes, and fun activities for parents and children.
Why did you first start volunteering with RMHC-CNI, and what keeps you coming back?
I chose to begin my journey with RMHC-CNI because I was already familiar with the organization and deeply admired the impactful work they do in supporting families.
What is your favorite memory or experience from volunteering?
My favorite experience is whenever a child selects one of the toys we offer, or a family member picks out a toiletry item they need. Knowing that we can make something easier for the families—and hearing how much they appreciate it—keeps me coming back.
What does it mean to you to donate your time to our organization?
I gain so much joy from the time I donate. It’s hard to describe until you experience it. What we do makes such a difference.
If someone was thinking about becoming a volunteer with our organization, what would you tell them about getting involved?
If you’re thinking about getting involved, don’t be overwhelmed by the fear of commitment. The process to get started is smooth and easy, and the time commitment is flexible to fit your schedule. The personal rewards are worth every minute!
