April Volunteer of the Month – Lisa Tompkins
Meet our volunteers! Each month, we highlight stand-out volunteers and how they support families. For April, meet Lisa Tompkins, who has spent nine years helping families in all kinds of ways, from making meals to supporting House activities and so much more.
- How long have you volunteered with RMHC-CNI?
I have been a volunteer for more than nine years. - Where/how do you typically volunteer, and what do you usually do?
I’m an individual volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House near Comer Children’s Hospital in Hyde Park. I’ve done everything from providing Meals from the Heart groups with House tours to checking-in guest families, and from working at the front desk to restocking supplies and snacks. I also help with any special House events and activities, so I’m always willing to pitch in however I’m needed! - Why did you first start volunteering with RMHC-CNI, and what keeps you coming back?
I initially got involved when a friend told me about the wonderful resource the RMHC-CNI is for families during very difficult times. Some people think a Ronald McDonald House is a “fun place” for children to have parties or events, but that’s not really the case. While the House can certainly be a fun place for families, it’s more importantly it a safe, welcoming and nurturing space. So, I like knowing I am helping maintain a safe and comfortable home for families going through truly challenging situations. - What is your favorite memory or experience from volunteering?
For many years (pre-COVID) I looked forward to the annual Christmas party. Besides the look on the children’s faces when they chose gifts from Santa’s workshop, I also enjoyed the interaction with other families and volunteers as we played games and got to know each other better. - If someone was thinking about becoming a volunteer with our organization, what would you tell them about getting involved?
I would encourage everyone to get involved. It means so much to others to take even a few hours out of your week. You can share a talent or be a smiling face to greet families – all are welcome and needed! The Ronald McDonald House is an amazing place with wonderful, friendly staff.
Thank you Lisa for your many years of dedication and support!
