Providing Hope and Hospitality in the Heart of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital

Our Family Room serves as a haven of respite and hospitality for families whose children and newborns are receiving treatment at the hospital.  Located within the pediatric unit, the space provides a home-like atmosphere, allowing families a moment to rest and rejuvenate.

The Family Room is approximately 3,400 square feet and includes nine sleep rooms with private bathrooms, a kitchenette, dining table, television area, and sitting areas.

‘Snacks from the Heart’ Volunteers

While our Family Room guests are welcome to take a short walk to Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children’s, many are unable to leave for extended periods of time due to the critical health status of their child. Unlike our five local stand alone Ronald McDonald Houses, the Family Room does not have a full service kitchen where volunteer groups can provide home-cooked meals that bring loving comfort to families.

However, the Family Room has a microwave and refrigerator for snacks and meals dropped off by loved ones and volunteers. The Family Room Snacks from the Heart program helps to provide snacks and meals to theses families. The snacks and meals that are purchased and delivered directly to the Family Room, will help provide nourishment and care to the families staying in our Family Rooms every day, allowing parents to have a quick snack or meal so they can fortify their bodies and focus 100% on the care of their child in the hospital.

Since we are in a hospital setting, all snack and meal donations need to be catered or store purchased/sealed.  Possible ways for the community to help provide food for the families include restaurant donated meals or groups sponsoring a catered meal.  Donors can plan to provide for 25 people.  The gratitude for families for this service is tremendous!
