LG Church collects 124,000 poptabs for Ronald McDonald House
First Presbyterian Church of La Grange is helping the local Ronald McDonald House so they can in turn help others in need. The church recently donated about 124,000 pop tabs (about 95 pounds).
First Presbyterian started promoting the pop tab program about two years ago. Sarah Beglen, youth coordinator for this program at the church says, ‘Last year (our first year), we gave about 22,000 tabs and we had hoped to just double the amount this year, but we far exceeded that!” She added, “ It takes a lot of pop tabs to create a pound of scrap metal; but this is more than that; it’s a great service project that everyone, even young kids, can get involved in it.” Beglen was excited with how many tabs the church collected from members and the community.
The 18 bedroom home, located near Loyola Hospital, opened in 1995, has served over 7,700 families. Sue Vadovicky, Asst. House Manager, says “the home serves families who have children staying at many local hospitals including Loyola, Shriners, and others.” “It is a warm home away from home with laundry facilities, kitchens, library, snack and lounge areas and well as the bedrooms for the families.” “The theme for this home is Secret Garden with each room decorated as a different flower”.
The tabs collected are then recycled by recycling partner, United Scrap Metal, and the house receives the market value of the recycled metal – plus a charitable match. Unfortunately, the market value has declined, so the amount they receive for the same number of pop tabs is declining.
Collecting pop tabs (one can bring them to First Presbyterian Church of La Grange (150 S. Ashland LG) or to the Ronald McDonald House) is one way people can show their support for the house. Groups or families can also contact the house to donate and/or prepare a meal or baked goods. They also welcome volunteers to help with the office and housework. There is a wish list that people can donate from. Some of the items on their current wish list include:
· Laundry Detergent
· Gift Cards/Certificates to Jewel, Dominick’s, Costco or Target
· Forever postage Stamps
· Cleaning Wipes (Clorox, etc)
· Ajax powered cleanser
· Liquid hand soap in pump dispensers
· Tablets/Powdered Dishwasher Detergent
· Batteries (all sizes)
